I love Vince Lombardi, the former coach of the Green Bay Packers and the Washington Redskins. He did things his way, and his players obviously responded to his methods.
Lombardi was hired 52 years ago this week to take over a team that had won 1 game the previous season. By the time he retired after the 1967 season, the Packers had won 98 of 132 games and five NFL titles, including the first two Super Bowls. Lombardi was all about winning, nothing else mattered. As a long suffering Browns fan, I certainly do admire that.
This story typifies Lombardi the man—even though it isn’t true. The story goes that after the 1963 season, All Pro Center Jim Ringo showed up with an agent to try and negotiate a raise. The coach calmly excused himself, and returned five minutes later, announcing that Ringo had been traded to Philadelphia. Turns out the Packers had been trying to trade Ringo before that day…but the story persisted because Lombardi wanted people to believe it. Many did.
I am not going to tell you that if Lombardi, who died in 1970 at the age of 57, were alive today, he would be driving a Roadtrek class b camper. If he were alive today, he would be 98 years old! But I do think he would have liked and respected the vehicle.
The Roadtrek is the number one selling Class B motorhome in North America—and has been for two decades. That’s a winning record that even Lombardi would have envied. The Roadtrek is the easiest of it’s a class to maneuver thru traffic, and because of its smaller size, parking is a breeze. For Lombardi, who broke football down to its simplest form, those are qualities he would have admired.
The coach would have also admired the convenience of the Roadtrek. Having his own kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom wherever he went would have definitely been to his liking. And while he didn’t attend many school functions or go to the grocery store—he was a football coach!—being able to take the same vehicle on short or long scouting trips would have pleased the man as well.
